Garmin inReach

When you go far out of cell service as often as I do, especially if I am running a class or guiding people its important that should an emergency arise you have the ability to get help. For a long time the only option was a satellite phone, that came with a hefty price tag not only for the phone, but for the plan as well. Locator beacons were another option, but communication options were limited. The Garmin inReach is a happy medium. It has all the functionality of an outdoor GPS, but the ability to send and receive text messages to friends and family, but also have an SOS feature to alert the nearest SAR unit to you location in case of emergency. I carry mine with me everywhere attached to my backpack. There are many different sizes and feature options available!
