EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
With the recent popularity of “survival” based TV shows, there are folks out there who are just trying to capitalize on the market They have very little “dirt time” with the skills. This will lead to a poor experience for the student and a waste of your money! Anyone I personally recommend I know to be the best of the best in outdoor education.
The Tracker School
The Alpha and the Omega. I’m so thankful for being raised where I was in space and time. It instilled in me a deep reverence, respect, and thanksgiving for the wild places and the beings that dwell there. Everything I have in my life, I owe to my father. From the path I walk to pretty much every friend I have from working at the Tracker school. I can't express how much gratitude I have for my father and mother for instilling in me a passion for nature at an early age, for it shaped me into the man I am today. One that is driven to lead as many people as I can back to the wild places and teach them the intricate web that is the natural world.
Roots VT
I first met Brad and Sarah when they were students at Tracker school. Then they became interns. Flash forward a few decades, and they have become some of the most talented teachers and makers of some of the most beautiful pieces of functional art out there. Bow making, Hide tanning, Basketry, and Flint knapping are but a few of the many skills they teach. If you live in the North-East, you can’t go wrong with a visit to Roots.
Ancestral Knowledge
Bill Kaczor is one of my best friends, Whom I just so happen to owe Wookie life-debt to. All kidding aside, Bill runs the best classes in the Maryland/Washington DC area. He offers everything from homeschool programs to Overnight camps in the summer.
Les Primitifs
My friend Mathieu Hébert runs Les Primitifs, which I think is the best Winter Survival School in the world. If you ever wanted to hone your winter skills, check them out!
The Sharpening Stone
is an epic property in Wolf Creek, Or. Adam and his wife Sarah are amazing, knowledgeable people. 4EEE Was founded by Rick Barry who is a long time friend and probably one of the best children's nature educators I know. is located in the grass Valley area of California. Rick and his organization primarily teach kids and teens, and we've been discussing me heading down there and doing some adult programming. Stay tuned for news on that!
