Long before we lived in cities and towns, our ancestors relied on a set of art forms to exist in the wild places. They had a very deep connection to the landscape because the things that existed there sustained them. By learning these primitive art forms, we establish a deeper connection with our ancestors and learn about nature. We can make any tool we need from gathering things in the wild, building shelter, and finding food. When we are in direct contact with our surroundings, we look upon the world through a new lens of reverence, respect, and thanksgiving.
Another hidden benefit of learning these arts is the ability to care for yourself and your family should an emergency arise in the wilderness by applying the principles our forebearers used to survive so that we can take care of ourselves in almost any situation that arises.
Our ancestors were expert hunters. Not only were they proficient with whatever weapon they chose to use, but They were also masters at all the skills needed to be an effective hunter. There is so much more to hunting than being accurate with whichever tool you use. There also needs to be a deep understanding of the animals you pursue and Stalking, movement, and Camouflage. As well as Tracking and Sign Tracking and how to read landscapes so you know best where to hunt. Students will receive a copy of the Zoom recording.
Skills You will learn:
Animal Tracking
Stalking and Movement
How to read the Landscape to pick the best places to hunt
How to read topographical and Satellite maps and Identify good hunting areas
Naturalist studies and knowing the animals we pursue
And Many more!
Who are the animals that live in the woods around us? How do we expand our awareness to find their signs and maybe even get a glimpse of the animals themselves?
Our modern lifestyle cuts us off, not only from the natural world but also from our senses. In this class, you will learn to undo the focused vision that years of being inside by taking our physical scientist to the gym; we will learn how to expand your awareness through focused activities, story, games, and practice. The goal is to wake ourselves up and, through the process, expand our observations of the natural world and of the animals we share it with. Throughout the class, we will also be looking for signs of our animal neighbors, learning how to interpret the tracks and other signs an animal may have passed through. We will learn to not just look but truly see. Movement is also crucial to blending in to any natural setting. You will learn movement modalities that will not only enrich your time in nature, but have been scientifically proven to be much easier on your body and your joints. By looking and moving differently, a whole New World opens to us, one full of wonder and mystery.

If you ever find yourself lost in the woods and forget the knife you usually carry, you should learn as many ways of creating a sharp edge using natural materials as possible. The art of flint knapping is breaking certain types of rocks that only exist in various pockets around the country into stone knives and arrowheads. You can take some rocks, smash them on the ground, and get an edge to carve a Bowdrill notch, but you'll want something a little more precise eventually. Bone tools can be shaped into anything from the fishhook to spearpoint. That material is animal bone.
Class Dates: all classes begin at 4 PM Pacific and end at 6 PM
4/6/24 Part 1
5/11/24 Part 2
6/8/24 Part 3
6/29/24 Part 4
7/20/24 Part 5
8/5/24 part 6
Throughout this class experience, I will teach you:
How to find animal bones
Processing them in a way to maximizes the amount of tools you can get from a single piece of bone.
Show you how to process and utilize the sinews, which can be used for anything from sewing to making a bowstring, and in the context of this class, how to attach a bone arrowhead to the arrow itself.
I will also teach you how to process evergreen tree sap into what is known as "pitch glue." It makes for fantastic waterproofing
a few tools you will learn to make are spears/arrowheads, needles, and knives, to name a few! Oh, and jewelry as well!
We will create a group chat in WhatsApp or something like that, so they can always contact each other for questions and show off the cool things you're making!

Learn how to move like a shadow across the landscape! By practicing the techniques learned in this class, your Nature experiences will be exponentially enhanced! When a modern human enters, the Woods is like an alien invader creating a week of disturbance. If you want to have experiences where you see wildlife and get a deeper sense of connection when you enter the wild, movement is critical. We must learn to match our movements to the Ebb and flow of what's happening around us. We can become invisible by learning to match our movements to the baseline.
Please try to be in the waiting room five minutes before the start time so we can start at four.
Even though webinars are scheduled to be two hours, they often run longer. If that happens, I will take a five-minute break in between.
